Thermal analysis
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) Analysis
DSC measures heat-flow changes associated with melting, crystallization, glass transition, curing, and other thermal events.
Differential Scanning Calorimetry compares heat flow into a sample and reference during a controlled temperature program. RNDgrid coordinates temperature range, heating and cooling rate, atmosphere, pan type, cycle sequence, and sample history with partner laboratories. These conditions materially affect transition temperatures and enthalpy results.
When this method is useful
- Polymers, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, composites, phase-change materials, and formulated products
- Melting, crystallization, glass transition, curing, oxidation, and comparative thermal-history studies
- Quality control and formulation comparisons when a consistent validated method is used
What the report can include
- Heat-flow curve against temperature or time
- Transition onset, peak, midpoint, and enthalpy values as applicable
- Heating/cooling cycle comparison under stated conditions
Sample preparation and scoping
- Disclose decomposition, volatility, reactivity, moisture sensitivity, and expected transition range.
- Provide representative sample mass and any required conditioning history.
- Use consistent preparation and thermal history for comparative work.
Limitations to consider
- Overlapping transitions and small glass transitions can be difficult to resolve.
- Results depend on sample mass, pan, rate, atmosphere, calibration, and prior history.
- DSC does not directly identify decomposition products; TGA or evolved-gas methods may be needed.
Capabilities, detection limits, accreditation scope, and turnaround vary by method and partner laboratory. Confirm the final scope in the quotation before sending samples.
Questions to answer before booking
- Which transitions and temperature range are expected?
- Is one heating cycle sufficient, or are cooling and second heating required?
- Does the sample need sealed, vented, or special pans?
